Letter to Edwin G. Bard, Brooklyn, NY, March 17, 1898. He tells of the explosion on the USS Maine in Havana harbor and the coming of war which he decries but will participate in when it comes. Promises to bring him stamps and coins when he comes home in May.

Maine (Battleship)

USS Maine (BB/2C), an armored battle ship, was blown up in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. A court of inquiry was unable to obtain evidence regarding the cause of the ship's destruction. In August 1910, Congress authorized the raising of the ship. The hull was refloated and towed into the Gulf of Mexico where it was sunk with honors on March 16, 1912.
